What does it take to be successful in finance? What are some of the common roles where graduate-level training is required? And in what ways might graduate training help candidates succeed in unexpected ways? This panel will address questions about how to position oneself effectively, how to network, and what it takes to get started on a path toward a rewarding career in finance from the perspective of diverse individuals within the industry.


Jeri Chen, Financial Analyst, Magellan Development (MPP Public Finance 2014)

Jeri Chen, financial analyst of Magellan Development Group LLC, is responsible for underwriting prospective real estate transactions and creating pro-forma model for development projects. In this capacity, Jeri performs detailed financial analysis and works collaboratively with other internal departments including accounting, legal, construction, marketing, sales, and architecture. Prior to joining Magellan Development, she was a Mayoral Fellow at the City of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office and worked at Wells Fargo Advisors as an Operations Manager. LinkedIn

Florian Huchede, Director, Quantitative Risk Management, CME Group (MS Financial Math 2010)

Florian Huchede is a Master of Science alumni in Financial Mathematics at the University of Chicago, with over 9 years’ experience in the financial industry. Florian worked for HSBC, Credit Agricole Asset Management, The Option Clearing Corporation and is currently the lead FX quantitative risk manager at the CME Group. Florian's team is responsible for developing products and risk and pricing models for the FX asset class. LinkedIn

Kathryn Gulleen, Financial Analyst, Valspar (AM Divinity 2014)

Kathryn Gulleen is a humanities devotee turned finance professional. After receiving her MA in the Historical Studies of Religion from the University of Chicago Divinity School, Kathryn switched career paths and entered the business world. Currently, she is a Finance Analyst with Valspar, a leader in the global paint industry, supporting their Global Sourcing team. Kathryn lives in Minneapolis with her husband and their two cats. In her spare time you can usually find her creating elaborate Excel spreadsheets for fun, running, knitting, or reading books on history and religion. LinkedIn


John Smetanka, Retired Banker (AB 1971, PhD Harvard Social Psychology & Organizations 1977)

For more than 20 years, John Smetanka pursued an international banking career in Asia and the Middle East. John’s international career encompassed senior banking positions in Singapore, Dubai, Egypt, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Hong Kong with Standard Chartered Bank, American Express Bank, Bank of America, and Security Pacific Asian Bank. These positions covered an array of line management and staff functions in various areas, most recently private banking and wealth management. Before moving to Asia, John worked for Security Pacific Merchant Bank and M&T Bank in the US. He earned an AB’71 (Honors) in Psychology from the University and an MA and PhD in Social Psychology and Organizations from Harvard University. He was a university professor before embarking upon his banking career. Upon returning to the US in 2011, John moved to Chicago. He currently chairs the Careers Committee of the Alumni Club of Chicago and has been active in alumni activities in Hong Kong, Singapore, London, and Chicago. LinkedIn
